When the carbon tax kicks in on July 1, it will cost you more to drive a car, heat your home and even flip a burger on your barbecue. The carbon tax is a tax on the carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels.

The tax is aimed at encouraging people, and industry, to lower their energy consumption by changing their behaviour, thereby reducing their carbon footprint.
The carbon tax will apply to all fossil fuels, including gasoline, diesel, natural gas, coal, propane and home heating fuel.It will be phased in to give everyone a chance to adjust. The province has chosen to start the rate based $10 per tonne of carbon dioxide emissions, reaching $30 per tonne by 2012.

For motorists, this means you'll get dinged an extra 2.4 cents a litre for gas in the first year.According to government figures, this means the carbon tax will cost you $20 a year if your drive a fuel efficient hybrid like a Toyota Prius, $33 if your drive the top selling car in B.C. - a Honda Civic, jumping to $68 a year for a gas guzzling truck.

But those figures will climb. The tax will gradually rise, reaching 7.2 cents a litre by 2012.On average, to heat your home with natural gas in the first year will cost you an extra $35 a year, rising to $105 a year in 2012.In 2008, you'll also pay $1.53 more for a litre of propane.
