European Championship title

VIENNA, Austria — Fernando Torres finally lived up to his billing as one of the world’s great strikers by scoring Sunday to give Spain a 1-0 win over Germany in the European Championship final.

Torres, who had been overshadowed by teammate David Villa all tournament, scored in the 33rd minute to down the three-time European champions and earn his nation’s first major title in 44 years.

In the end, Spain was a deserved winner of the 13th European Championship. Long known as an underachiever that peaked between tournaments rather than at them, the team reached the final at Ernst Happel Stadium with a string of beguiling attacking displays orchestrated by a vibrant midfield — and held true to its values in the highest pressure match.

Xavi, Andres Iniesta and David Silva swapped positions constantly against a midfield marshalled by Michael Ballack and eventually wore out their opponents until it seemed Spain was simply counting down time until the final whistle.

2008 NHL Draft

The pressure of being a first-round NHL draft pick hit Cody Hodgson bright and early yesterday when local media grilled Vancouver Canucks prospects after a full workout. "In Brampton there was one newspaper guy," he joked under the bright lights.

But Canuck GM Mike Gillis didn't draft the Ontario native 10th overall for his savvy in front of the mic. The smooth-skating 18-year-old centre racked up 40 goals and 45 assists in 68 games in his last season playing for the Brampton Battalion. "I try to play a smart and offensive game that creates chances for my teammates and at the same time not be a defensive liability," he said.

Second-round selection Yann Sauve hit this ice for the first time in a Canucks uniform yesterday as well. The former first overall pick in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League said he's willing to work on his game before he wears the blue and green full time.
